Soft Tissue Injuries Drill a Success PDF Print E-mail

The Soft Tissues OTEP drill held on March 10th, 2010, led by FF/Paramedic Wade Snow was a huge success. The fire district strives to train its volunteers and staff to the best standards, in doing so training for the real event is difficult and hard to prepare for. FF/Paramedic Snow put on a fantastic realistic training on soft tissue injuries. Using outside volunteers, and department volunteer to play the part of a victim, the district held its training at Vaughn Pumps in Montesano in their shop area's. These volunteers were dressed to look the part - One had a fully amputated left arm, Another had a Drill press drilling through his arm, 2 others were injuries caused from other means, such as a forklift or electrocution. Each person was placed in the shop area's where department volunteers and staff had to get to them by navigating the shop machinery and gain access to the injured person. Most of the department participated in this great practice that helps us prepare for the real thing.

No we didnt burn the station down PDF Print E-mail

You may have driven by the Central Park Fire Station sometime during the night on Wednesday, January 27th and saw all of the fire trucks out in the parking lot with hoses laying on the ground, firefighters with gear and packs on running around with smoke coming out of the station doors. You were probably thinking oh my, the fire station is on fire. Well, that was not the case. This was a live training exercise used to test the skills of department fire fighters using realism to prepare us for the real thing. In this particular drill, we used the smoke fog machine to create an environment that is similar to what we might find at an actual working fire; in order to help teach the importance of accountability, keeping track of team members and organization on the fire grounds. One of the most important things a department must have to ensure the safest fire scene is accountability of all personnel there. This drill helped our responders to remember how to do this.

Fire District 2 conducts drills at multiple times each month in conjunction with Montesano Fire and each of the firefighter associations. Sometimes these trainings are fire and EMS based classroom classes, realism drills, driving drills or traveling to other agencies for ongoing training. Grays Harbor Fire District #2 adopted the State Firefighter 1 Standard as the minimum standard for all training for the District a few years ago and it takes a lot of dedication for department volunteers to reach the high standard we have set, but all our people are worth it.

The winter EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) Class in Grays Harbor County starts this month on the 9th with an all day Saturday class. GH Fire District 2 has 8 volunteers attending the class this year. This is up from 2 that attended last years class. 1 of the volunteers had taken First Responder class last year, One had been an EMT in prior years, with the other 6 new to the EMS service. The district has a few new members that have joined in the last several months, with most having been with the department 6 or more months. This is a great opportunity for volunteers to gain more training, and to be able to better help the community.

The EMT class runs 3 days a week for 4 months with members having to put in 8 hours of station time a week, lab time at the hospital and normal department drills and calls. This will be a tremendous task for these volunteers and we wish them all of the best luck.
